Taxidermy is an art that requires skills you obtain through practice. The better taxidermists can produce mounts that are so life like, you wouldn’t know they were a mount if you happened across it in the street. It’s true that while some people find the art offending, many others practice and enjoy it. There are many people who don’t perform that actually mounting of the animal but they enjoy their mounted animal collections.taxidermy Polar Bear

Contrary to popular belief, a mounted animal does not have the carcass inside. Once the animal carcass is posed and cast, it is discarded. The hide is used on the cast after it has been treated. There are companies that produce pre-cast molds that are gaining in popularity.

In the early days of taxidermy, the methods used were very crude and did not produce very good results. It was a popular thing in the 1700s and most towns had some sort of taxidermy or tannery establishment. In those days, carcasses were stuffed with things like rags and cotton. The results were less than stellar.

Taxidermy started to advance in the early 20th century as more realistic poses of the animals were made and with the better use of newer techniques and chemicals, the mounts looked pretty life like. This was a big draw to the hunting crowd since they liked to have their kills mounted after going out on a successful hunt.mounted fish

The main technique today of taxidermy involves removing the skin and then creating a plaster cast of the carcass after it has been posed. A more trendy form of taxidermy for the wealthy is to have their favorite pets mounted using the freeze dried method which is expensive and takes a lot more to time successfully complete a mount. I don’t know if I’d like to look at my favorite fluffy cat every day after it’s gone on to the great cat condo in the sky. That would creep me out. But hey, to each their own is what I always say.
