General Cost depends on the size of the fish, and the taxidermest. But you can get a taxidermy from a picture. Just give them estimates on the size and they should have no problem replicating it. I would call around to your local taxidermist shops. Actually there are places that specialize in just fish, making fiberglass replicas.

Yes! It’s amazing what they can do with fiberglass. It’s a bit easier if they have measurements of the fish, but it can be done. As for cost, you’ll have to speak with your local taxidermist.

Yes, they can make a fiberglass model of the fish, but it helps if you have the dimensions of the fish length etc. It can get costly so be warned.

hey man, yea you can but the artist will need the exact weight and measurement of the fish to get the closest possible duplication of your fish. with most taxidermist want the length measurement around the stomach exact weight. that is what alot of animal right activist are pushing for now. i can agree to a point with them. catch anf realease. but you know…sometimes they just look better next to a plate of hush puppies. to each his own i guess. the process is very pricey too. i hope that helps you out a bit. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

I am assuming from your question that you actually have a picture of the fish. If so, there are most apt to be items in the picture from which a “good” taxidermist can do the basic math required to replicate the exact size of your fish. The girth will be comparable as well.

As an example, I once had a customer referred to me by a guide service who’s taxidermist had lost the customer’s fish. The picture they provided showed the cutthroat trout laying beside a trout net of the same length. The net was 22″ long. From that photo, we were able to make an exact and very accurate duplicate right down to the same colors and spot patterns. When the real fish was later recovered, the customer declined it in preference to one we had made for him from scratch.

As for the cost, that will depend on where you live and who you have doing the work. Each taxidermist has his own rate based on his over-head expenses, etc. and what he is willing to work for per hour. Most in that business are very fair and also very competitive with each other, so feel free to do a little price shopping before you settle on any one. (I have known prices in this category to go anywhere from $8 or $9 up to $15 or even $20 per inch based on the length of the fish. His price for the blank will cost him from $3 or $4 up to $5+ per inch before he even starts work on it.)

While you are at it, you may also want to know about the experience of the artist. How long in business? Educated/trained, or self taught? Any awards won in competitions with fellow artists of the same profession? And so on.

And don’t forget to ask about the time allowed for the delivery of your order. (Some taxidermists are a year or more behind.) If he/she takes too long, go to someone with a quicker turn-around time. Trust me on this point: Today, you want it bad enough to pay for it and even pay well. But a year from now???? The excitement will have probably worn off by then….maybe even to the point that you may have completely forgotten about the thrill of it all. Unless, of course, you have a bright and beautiful replicated reminder of it hanging on your wall to remind you of that special day when…….
