How can I soften the rawhide on a buffalo skin that has hardened?

This was a taxidermy skin that was going to be mounted and it hardened. I want to use the skin for an Indian Bonnet to dance in Powwows.

    Try soaking it in water, then try saddle soaping it.
    wash your hands frequently, tannic acid can hurt you.

    You’re going to cringe but try it. Rub the skin side repeatedly with cow brains. It softens it. That is how the Native Americans softened it before tanning.
