How do you make a taxidermy plush?

RayJ asked:

I have no idea how to do taxidermy but I’m really interested. Can someone please give me some sort of tutorial? I also don’t know what sort of pelt to buy (just the top, or the full pelt, or what?). I’m looking at making a coyote or fox.

I’m not interested in mounting it, but rather closing it and stuffing it so it’s flexible and mobile. Thanks!

I don’t think you’re going to find many helpful answers here.

I for one think the practice is well … morbid and disgusting.

But good luck with it, you should google it.

you cant make them flexible and mobile.. that would cause wear and tear on the skin and coat and it would break down.

You have to remember that its skin.. its dead tissues and they are very fragile.. its not some toy to play with.

    basically how taxidermy is made..

skin the dead animal.. you have to be sure to remove ALL tissues and fats from the skin.

the skin is then put in salt to dry it and remove all moisture.. Im not sure how long this is done for, or what type of salts are used.. some practices may also use chemicals that may be more effective in preserving the skins.

the skin is then put over a peice of foam that is cut and shaped like the animal.. it is already cut to be the shape of the desired pose. stitched back up and finishing touches like glass eyes are added.

Just the pelt wont be what you need, as the pelt by itself is not always left properly intact for the purpose of stuffing… you pretty much have to start with the animal itself.

I don’t think you’ve got this in the right forum… but check out foxy creations on deviantart. She might be able to help you out.

I’m not a fan of taxidermy plushes at all… but whatever floats your boat.
