Is borax the same thing as boric acid? If not does boric acid work for preserving hides like borax does? ?

No boric acid is not the same as borax
Boric Acid is made from Borax by minerals and water and then evaporating the water
Boric Acid will preserve your hide by inhibiting microorganism growth, desiccating the hide and preventing insect and fungus infestation

I hope no one tells my ten year old rabbit fur that boric acid wont work on it

No, boric acid is no good for tanning. After properly scraping, use the borax and a potash solution. Each soak is followed by complete rinsing and use tallow to set.
No, they are not the same thing at all. borax is disodium tetraborate and has the chemical formula Na2[B4O5(OH)4]8H2O. Boric acid is trihydorxidoboron and has the chemical formula of B(OH)3.
Boric Acid is an antiseptic and may have some preservative qualities but I have never tried it as a means of preserving a hide nor have I known anyone else who has done this. If you have an extra hide that you don’t mind using for an experiment, you could try using boric acid instead of borax to see what it does. I don’t know why you would choose boric acid over the proven borax since boric acid costs more than borax.
